CAMBRIDGE GUITAR WEEKEND 2010 - COURSE DETAILS
The 3rd Cambridge Guitar Weekend will take place on the weekend of 1/3 October 2010 and is again being arranged by Tony Ainsworth and Peter Rueffer will again be the course Musical Director.
The workshop / coaching will be carried out this year by Mark and Chris Eden of the Eden Stell Duo, Peter Rueffer and Peter Nutall.
The Saturday evening concert will be performed by the Eden Stell Duo.
The course location is Buckden Towers which is in the lovely village of Buckden adjacent to the A1 trunk road just south of Huntingdon. The location is easily accessible and is approximately one hour from North London, the M25, South Yorkshire, East Anglia and the Midlands.

Buckden Towers is of considerable historical and architectural interest and the House has undergone some internal refurbishment. There is a church on site which is ideal for the proposed Saturday night concert. The gardens are beautiful, extensive and there is lovely walled knot garden and large lake.

The concert, which will be open to the public, will be held in the on-site church adjacent to the House. It has good acoustics and will hold around 150. The concert will be given by the Eden Stell Duo. The concert is included in the course fee (resident and non-resident). Tickets for the concert are £10 each (£8 concessions) which includes refreshments (wine and soft drinks).
The students’ concert will consist of a performance of the Guitar Orchestra pieces including Peter Nutall’s coaching composition and of the individually prepared pieces.
The emphasis will be on ensemble playing.
Many arrive at a guitar course with a preformed ensemble having practised their own piece(s) beforehand. Occasionally, a person will arrive with no partner but wishes to have ensemble coaching. At most courses an effort is made to pair that person with another in a similar position on the day. We wish to avoid that if possible and pair people off beforehand and so we will ask the participant to advise us accordingly.
In addition to the Orchestra music, which will be supplied by Peter Rueffer, he is happy to supply music for coaching if you wish though it would be better if people, paired off as above, agree amongst themselves what they wish to play in order to practise their parts in advance.
Participation in coaching is, of course, not compulsory but this does seem to be an element of courses which is greatly appreciated, as is a concert by well known professional guitarists.
As much correspondence as possible will be by email and the music will be distributed in electronic format as PDF files openable by Adobe Reader which most PCs have (but which can be easily downloaded free). This will save a great deal of administration work and help control costs.
Fees will be at or only a little above 2008 levels ie between £190 and £230 depending on accommodation.
It is also possible for non-guitarist friends or partners to come and share your room at a daily cost of approximately £30 B&B up to £50 full board. In addition if you have friends who wish to come to the concert and perhaps stay in your room overnight then these rates would apply or else around £25 solely for the bed.
There is no bar. However, participants may bringing their own alcoholic beverages.
There are lots of local countryside walks, Grafham Water, river walks etc. A pass is also available to use the local swimming pool/gym at Offord Marina for those staying overnight. Cambridge is only a few miles away.
As there are only 17 bedrooms (37 beds) we will treat applications for a residential place on a first come first served basis. There are only four rooms with en-suite facilities unfortunately and therefore these cannot be guaranteed. However, there are many bathrooms and shower rooms in the House and there is roughly one bathroom / shower room to every two bedrooms. This has worked well in the past and no problems were experienced.
We are able to provide bespoke fees for various combinations of requirements e.g. partial non-residential attendance, meals for guests, shared accommodation and the like.
The maximum number of people that can be accommodated is 30, this being limited by the size of the dining room. Priority will be given to guitarists.
